Essential Things to Take on a Trip

Lists of Equipment

We’ll send you the list of necessary equipment together with the contract. It usually raises a lot of questions. We've tried to answer the most common ones below in the ‘’Details’’ section.

Please note that our equipment lists are just recommendations. If you don’t have anything from the list, don't worry — you don't have to buy it immediately. Firstly, try to make your own list of equipment. If you failed to find something please contact us and we’ll advise you on what to do.

If you want to rent equipment, click here to see the possible options. Please ask about the availability of items you’ve chosen when applying for the tour.

Backpack

The capacity of a backpack should be at least 80 liters for men and 60 liters for women. If you buy a small and lightweight backpack, it would be harder to pack. So the backpack should be big and have enough space.

By the way, all your things should fit INSIDE the backpack. If you hang something outside, you risk losing or breaking the things.

Tent

If you already have a tent and you want to take it on a trip, please inform us about its characteristics (capacity, weight, etc.).

Sleeping bag

You can rent a sleeping bag in our Club. Please ask for availability when applying. If you plan to buy a sleeping bag, we advise you to read our recommendations.

Sleeping mat

You could see such mats at the gym. Their main purpose is to resist heat transfer and keep you insulated from the ground. The best option is a traditional mat. You can also rent it in our Club (if available).

Telescopic trekking poles

It’s an optional thing. The poles look like adjustable ski poles used while walking. They can increase balance and stability and have two more points of contact on the ground. You can get just one trekking or ski pole or don’t use them at all.

Storm suit

The storm suit will help you to keep warm and not get sick in bad weather. The best suit is a Gore-Tex windproof jacket that can: a) protect you against wind and rain, b) ensure the moisture transport to the outside due to the breathable outer membrane. The jacket must be with a hood. You can easily catch a cold without it. You can take several raincoats instead, but please note that they are made of very thin material that tears easily. It’s also important that the trousers should be also breathable and waterproof. Alternatively, you can take a raincoat together with a windproof suit.

Rainsuit

The most budget option is a polyethylene raincoat. But you should be ready that it can tear easily and it would be better to take several extra raincoats.

It’s better to take special rain ponchos made of durable waterproof fabric. It will cover you and your backpack, so there will be no need to buy an additional cover for the backpack.

Backpack cover

Even the best backpack can get wet, so we recommend taking a backpack cover to keep your bag and its contents from rain. You can take either a separate backpack cover, or a large rain poncho that covers you and your bag. Please note that in any case we recommend packing all the things inside plastic bags.

Sleepwear

The most comfortable option for hiking and backpacking is thermal underwear and woolen socks. Depending on the temperature, you can also add a hat and gloves. Thermal underwear retains heat and absorbs moisture from your skin. You can also choose a set with wool.

A budget option for sleepwear can be pants, a turtleneck and woolen socks. But we do not recommend this option for camping at high altitude and for hiking in the cold season.

Shoes

Depending on the tour, take boots or hard sole shoes and spare shoes such as sports sandals. Before you wear them hiking, break them in: wear them inside your house, on short walks or in the gym.

Walking trousers

The best choice is synthetic sweatpants. They are light, quick-drying and also save you from mosquitoes. But a lot depends on the region and season. We do not advise you to take jeans with you — they are heavy, slow-drying and uncomfortable when walking for a long time. Don’t take wide leather belts — it can rub your back.

T-shirt

You can take your everyday T-shirt. But the best choice is a functional T-shirt made of powerful Polartec Power Dry material. It extremely fast removes the moisture from the body and keeps the skin dry. Also it dries quickly.

Warm sweater, hoodie

You may need warm clothes even in summer. The weather changes quickly in the mountains, so you should be ready for it. The best option is a hoodie made of Polartec or fleece. Also you can wear a wool sweater. Sweaters made of cotton are not recommended.

Warm hat and gloves

If you travel in summer, we recommend you to take a wool hat and warm gloves. Depending on the region and altitude, the temperature can decrease to 0°C.

Cap

At higher altitudes, the intensity of ultraviolet radiation increases, so you have to protect your ears, nose and head from the sun. A light panama or cap will perfectly suit.

Socks

Take with you cotton and wool socks. The main thing is that the shoe should fit snugly and comfortably with the sock. There are also special hiking socks. They are seamless and made of a material that absorbs and disperses all that moisture. They also fit snugly around your foot and reduce blister formation.

Camping dinner set (a mug, a spoon, a bowl, a knife)

Camping utensils should be light, durable and... capacious. So don’t take: ceramic mugs, flat plates, forks and disposable tableware. The knife should be small, especially if you have to go across the border.

Towel

Do not take large terry towels. We recommend taking small and compact towels. For example, a special microfibre towel which can absorb over 7 times its weight in water.

Empty plastic bottle

In this bottle you will carry water for drinking throughout the day. A bottle for 1–1.5 liters will be enough. It is convenient to fasten them under the ties on the side of the backpack.

LED flashlight

A flashlight is a must have on the tour! The top choice is LED headlamp. It’s cheap and very comfortable. It can work on a single charge for more than 100 hours. Don’t take with you huge and heavy flashlights.

Personal first aid kit

The first aid kit should be light and universal. Must-haves are hydrogen peroxide, brilliant green (for disinfection) and bandage. Also take plaster — as much as possible! You may also need: cold remedies, activated charcoal and some digestive health medicines. If you have problems with your joints, take elastic bandage and anesthetic ointment. If you take your special medicines, don’t forget to take them too (and please let us know about your health problems).

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is definitely one of the most hiking essentials. If you don’t protect your skin, you will likely get burned. We would recommend sunscreen not less than SPF30.

Personal hygiene

Girls tend to take a huge kit of creams and various cosmetics. But this will add some significant weight to the backpack. Please try not to take a lot of cosmetics or pour it into small bottles. In our experience, the weight of a beauty bag should not exceed 1 kg. And don’t forget about the toilet paper — it never goes amiss.

Camera

Please be ready that you won't be able to charge your gadgets on some routes (depending on the region and route). Then, either save batteries or take spare ones.

Mobile phone

We recommend you to take the mobile phone. As a rule, there are places with mobile connection on the route. The instructor will tell you about it. The rest of the time, the phone must be turned off.

Don’t bring:

  • Axes, saws (we will provide everything you need),
  • Photo tripod (except for auto and photo tours, as well as tours with porters),
  • Pots, gas burners,
  • Heavy books and magazines,
  • Extra food.
