Head of tour

We invite you on a fascinating journey through central Mongolia: we will walk along the steppe and desert, see camels and migratory birds, find hidden volcanoes and red cliffs, and visit the country's ancient capital.

The route is suitable for those who are ready for long off-road drives through sparsely populated areas and modest living conditions. We will spend two nights camping out in nature, and the rest in hotels. However, all possible inconveniences will be fully rewarded by the experiences of this expedition, discovering unique nature, and touching ancient history.

Highlights:

  • The Gobi Desert and dolomite cliffs;
  • Canyons and dry riverbeds;
  • An icy lake right in the middle of hot sands;
  • Wildlife encounters with Bactrian camels, khainags, and various migratory birds;
  • The ancient capital — the town of Kharkhorin and one of Mongolia's oldest monasteries, Erdene Zuu.

Desert and dolomite cliffs drive to Arvaikheer

In the morning, you will leave the capital of Mongolia and set off to explore the country's natural wonders. Today, you will walk through the desert and see the plants and animals that inhabit it. You will likely encounter Bactrian camels.

Afterward, you will head to the dolomite cliffs, shaped by the wind thousands of years ago.

Right next to them lies the legendary Gobi Desert. You can walk along the sand dunes in the Kharukhyn Gol river valley and perhaps spot migratory birds, including rare species like the bar-headed goose.

You will spend the night in the town of Arvaikheer. For dinner, you can visit a traditional Mongolian restaurant.

Ice in the desert ascent to 2,900 m drive to Bayankhongor

today you will head to Buuntsagan Nuur Lake. What makes it fascinating is that it is the very last to shed its ice during the warm season, meaning there is a good chance you will see ice right in the desert!

On the way to the lake, you will watch the desert give way to steppe, and you will climb through a river gorge to an altitude of 2,900 meters. A stunning panoramic view awaits you! Moreover, you can find ancient animal bones inside the gorge.

This time, instead of tents, you will spend the night at a hotel in the town of Bayankhongor.
