Khiva, with its over 2,500 years of history, stands as a remarkable example of an ancient Asian city that has been almost untouched by time. Within the formidable fortress walls of the historic district of Itchan Kala lies a true oriental fairytale, where each building is a unique architectural masterpiece.
We will explore this open-air museum and discover one of Khiva's most revered attractions, the Pahlavon Mahmud Complex, a significant pilgrimage site. Within the grounds of Itchan Kala, lies another “city within a city” – the Konya Ark fortress. Our tour will take us through the tallest minaret in the city – Islam Khoja minaret, offering a breathtaking view of Khiva, and Muhammad Aminkhan Madrasa. Our excursion will also include the main residence of Khiva's rulers, the Tash-Khauli Palace. Additionally, you can visit the Allakuli Khan Madrasa, which houses the Avicenna History of Medicine Museum. Another noteworthy spot is the Juma Mosque, with 213 carved wooden pillars.
Today, we will visit the ruins of Ayaz-Kala, an ancient fortress dating back to the 4th century BC. The name “Fortress in the Wind” refers to the labyrinth that protected its entrance, allowing the south wind to blow debris and dust away from the fort.
From the Ayaz-Kala fortress, we will proceed to another outstanding architectural monument of Khwarazm – the Toprak-Kala fortress (1st-4th centuries AD), which name translates as “Earth Fortress”.
Here, we will have the opportunity to explore the streets of the ancient city, its square, the remains of the temple of fire worshippers, and the ruined palace. In the 1st century AD, Toprak-Kala was a big city with a population of approximately 3,000 people. Archaeologists have discovered unique artifacts here, including well-preserved examples of ancient Khwarazm writings.
We will have lunch at Lake Akchakol. In the evening, we will arrive in the city of Nukus.
A new day brings new cities. We will spend the first half of the day in Muynak, a former port city on the shores of the Aral Sea. We will have the opportunity to visit the infamous sea monument and, from the observation deck, witness a panoramic view of the city and the desolate bottom of the former sea. Here, we can truly comprehend the scale of the Aral tragedy, witnessing how a bustling sea harbor transformed into a desert over several decades.
You will then walk along the bottom of the former sea, now overgrown with saxaul. Then we will visit the “Ship Graveyard”, where we'll see the rusting skeletons of ships left in the port after the disappearance of the Aral Sea. Additionally, we'll explore the Muynak Museum, home to artworks dedicated to the Aral Sea and the Amu Darya River.
After lunch, we will move to the Mizdakhkan Necropolis. This cemetery city with many burial sites from different eras is a unique place where burial buildings of several religions peacefully coexist.
Among the remarkable features of the necropolis is the “grave of Adam” and the mausoleum referred to as the “World Clock”, believed to count down time on Earth. Our exploration will also include visits to the mausoleums of Khalifa-Erezhep, Shamun-Nabi, and Mazlumkhan-sulu, as well as the hillock of Jumart-kassab.
In the evening, we will return to the hotel in the city of Nukus.
Today we will get to know Nukus better. This city is a real green oasis in the middle of the desert. We will walk around the city, visit the I.V. Savitsky Museum, often referred to as the “Louvre in the desert”. Renowned for its exceptional collection of Russian avant-garde paintings from the first half of the 20th century, the museum boasts approximately 90,000 exhibits. Among these are objects representing the material and artistic culture of ancient Khwarazm, a diverse collection of Karakalpak applied art, and the world's second-largest collection of Russian and Turkestan avant-garde paintings.
